Key points

  1. E-commerce platforms sold goods worth about ₹24,000 crore in the first two days of festive sales.
  2. Mobile phones made up 38-40% of sales, followed by consumer electronics at 25-27%.
  3. About two-thirds of opening-day shoppers came from Tier 2 towns and rural India.

Shoppers bought goods worth about ₹24,000 crore on e-commerce platforms in the first two days of this year’s festive sales, according to estimates from Redseer Strategy Consultants released on Monday.

About 6 to 6.5 crore people placed 8-9 crore orders across platforms including Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho and Ajio. Sales value ran at about six times a normal day, and the number of orders at about 14 times. First-time shoppers doubled from last year.

Phones first, fashion growing

Mobile phones were the biggest category, at 38-40% of sales, or ₹9,100-9,600 crore. Consumer electronics made up 25-27%, led by laptops and smart devices. Among large appliances, televisions, refrigerators and air conditioners accounted for more than two-thirds of sales, and 55-inch TVs dominated the best-sellers.

Fashion took 15-18% of sales, and its value grew 22-25% from last year.

Value fashion stood out, as shoppers from Tier 2 and smaller towns bought festive wear at accessible price points.

About two-thirds of shoppers on the opening day came from Tier 2 towns and rural areas, and roughly a third were from Gen Z. The quick-commerce arms of Amazon and Flipkart recorded four to five times their usual daily sales.

“We expect 100 million shoppers to shop in the entire 11-day first leg,” Mr Dalal said.

The strong start comes even as retail inflation rose to 5.54% in September, data released on Monday showed.
