How we use AI
Last updated:
AI assists our research, drafting and translation. Editors check and approve everything we publish.
What AI helps with
- Research: finding and summarising official documents, data releases and reports, so an editor can go to the original.
- Drafting: first drafts of stories, explainers and summaries, written from sources we have gathered.
- Translation: first drafts of our Hindi versions, which a Hindi editor then checks and rewrites where needed.
- Checking: spotting numbers or names that do not match their source.
What an editor always does
- Checks every fact, figure, date and quote against its source before publication.
- Decides what we cover, what the story says and how it is framed.
- Approves every story, headline, chart and translation before it goes live.
What we do not do
- We do not publish anything an editor has not read and approved.
- We do not use AI to invent quotes, sources or people.
- We do not present AI-generated images as photographs. Any illustration made with AI is labelled.
- Editorials are the editorial desk’s own view. AI may help with drafting, but the position is decided by people.
When AI gets it wrong
The responsibility is ours, not the tool’s. Mistakes are corrected under our corrections policy, like any other error.
