How we fact check

Last updated:

We check claims that are spreading widely or that come from people with power: ministers, MPs, party leaders and officials. We check claims from every side.

How we check a claim

  1. Trace the original. We find the first place the claim appeared, and the exact words, video or image.
  2. Check the record. We compare it with primary sources: laws, gazette notifications, official data, court orders, Parliament’s papers and the original statement.
  3. Ask. Where it helps, we ask the person or party who made the claim for their source.
  4. Publish the evidence. Each fact check shows the claim, our rating, what we found and numbered evidence, with links to every source so you can check it yourself.

For images and videos we also look for the earliest copy, earlier versions and signs of editing or AI generation.

Our ratings

  • True: accurate, with nothing important left out.
  • Mostly true: accurate, but needs context.
  • Misleading: partly true, but leaves a false impression.
  • False: not supported by the record.

We rate the claim, not the person who made it.

Updates and corrections

If new evidence comes to light we update the fact check and say what changed. If we got the rating wrong, we change it and log the correction on our corrections page.
