Privacy policy
Last updated:
This policy explains what personal data we collect, why, how long we keep it and what you can do about it. It is written for India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act). Puneet Singh, the publisher of LokVox, is the Data Fiduciary for this website.
What we collect
You can read LokVox without giving us any personal data.
- Newsletter: if you sign up for the Morning Brief, we collect your email address and which edition you chose (English or Hindi).
- Messages: if you write to us, by email or WhatsApp, we receive what you send and your contact details.
- Technical logs: our hosting provider, Cloudflare, keeps standard server logs, such as IP address and browser type, to run and protect the site.
Saved stories stay on your device
When you save a story, the list is stored in your browser on your own device. It is not sent to us.
Cookies
We use Google Analytics to count visits and see which stories are read, so we can decide what to cover. Google Analytics only runs if you choose Accept in our cookie notice. It then sets cookies that record pages viewed, the device and browser type, and an approximate location; it does not give us your name or email. If you choose Decline, no analytics cookies are set and the site works the same. You can change your choice at any time with the Cookies link at the bottom of every page. We do not use advertising cookies.
Why we use it
- Your email address: only to send you the newsletter you asked for. We rely on your consent, which you give when you sign up.
- Messages: to reply, to look into tips and complaints, and to correct our work.
- Logs: to keep the site working and secure.
We do not sell your data. We do not use it for advertising.
Who else handles it
Our site is hosted by Cloudflare, and we use Google Analytics to measure readership. We keep the newsletter list ourselves, in a database on Cloudflare, and deliver the emails through Amazon Web Services (Amazon SES), which processes your email address only to send them. When you sign up we record the date and a scrambled form of your IP address as proof of your consent.
How long we keep it
- Newsletter email: until you unsubscribe. We then delete it within 30 days.
- Messages: for as long as we need to deal with them, and no more than 12 months.
- Server logs: we do not keep server logs ourselves. Cloudflare processes request data under its own privacy policy.
Your rights
Under the DPDP Act you can:
- ask what personal data we hold about you and how we use it;
- ask us to correct, complete, update or erase it;
- withdraw your consent at any time. Every newsletter has an unsubscribe link, and withdrawing is as easy as signing up;
- nominate someone to exercise these rights for you if you die or cannot act yourself;
- complain to us, and if you are not satisfied with our answer, to the Data Protection Board of India.
Contact
For any privacy question or request, write to Puneet Singh at puneet@thar.co. We will reply within 15 days.
Changes
If we change this policy we will update this page and the date on it. If a change affects how we use your email address, we will tell newsletter readers first.
