Hatsun Agro tumbles 10% on thinner margins as Sterlite Tech's profit jumps on US tariff refund

Friday's results were met with little mercy on a weak day for smaller stocks. Dairy maker Hatsun Agro, BlueStone Jewellery and Creditaccess Grameen fell sharply, while Shree Cement gave up an early rally.

Key points

  1. Hatsun Agro fell 10.14% to ₹964.10 after its Ebitda margin slipped to 11.5%.
  2. Sterlite Technologies' quarterly profit rose to ₹517 crore, helped by a ₹161 crore tariff refund.
  3. Shree Cement's net profit fell 15.1% to ₹262 crore.

Companies that reported September-quarter numbers on Friday found little forgiveness on Dalal Street, where small and mid-sized shares were already being sold hard.

The steepest fall came in Hatsun Agro Product, the Chennai-based dairy company behind Arun Ice Creams. Its shares dropped 10.14% to ₹964.10 in the afternoon after its consolidated Ebitda margin narrowed to 11.5% from 13.4%.

BlueStone Jewellery and Lifestyle slid 8.4% to ₹697 after posting a net loss of ₹4.4 crore for the quarter. Microlender Creditaccess Grameen fell 4.31% to ₹1,041.06 even though its results were seen as healthy. Westlife Foodworld, which runs McDonald’s restaurants in western and southern India, reported a net loss of ₹2.7 crore.

Shree Cement rallied to a day’s high of ₹22,450 in the morning but gave back much of that gain after its net profit fell 15.1% to ₹262 crore.

A one-off lift for Sterlite

The bright spot was Sterlite Technologies, the optical fibre and cable maker. It reported a net profit of ₹517 crore for the quarter, up from ₹197 crore in the April to June period. The jump was driven partly by a one-time gain of ₹161 crore from a refund of tariffs paid in the United States.

Separately, telecom equipment maker HFCL hit its 5% lower limit at ₹238.98 on a day when it also set up a new subsidiary, HFCL Connectivity Systems.

More results are due after the close, led by Infosys, JSW Steel and Dr Reddy’s Laboratories.
