Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney on Tuesday, and the two agreed to build on the recent improvement in ties and aim for concrete results across their strategic partnership.

The conversation came on the day Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand began a four-day trip to India and the United Arab Emirates, which includes talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi.

Modi described the call as warm and productive in a post on X.

“We agreed to build on the positive momentum in India-Canada ties and work towards concrete outcomes across key areas of our Strategic Partnership, including trade, energy, technology, security and people-to-people ties.”

He added: “Together, India and Canada are contributing towards a more stable and prosperous world.”

A thaw that has picked up speed

Relations froze in 2023 and have been rebuilt step by step since. Carney visited India from 27 February to 2 March this year, the first bilateral visit by a Canadian prime minister in eight years. The two governments agreed then to negotiate a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement and set a target of concluding it by the end of 2026.

Two-way trade between the countries was worth C$30.4 billion in 2025, according to Ottawa. Anand’s visit, her 11th meeting with Jaishankar since September 2025, is meant to move forward a shared roadmap on trade, energy, security and people-to-people ties.
