Key points

  1. President Droupadi Murmu made Governor appointments in six states on Monday night.
  2. Rajendra Arlekar moves from Keralam to Tamil Nadu, and Om Prakash Mathur from Sikkim to Keralam.
  3. Each appointment takes effect when the Governor assumes charge.

President Droupadi Murmu on Monday night appointed Governors in six states, moving two serving Governors and naming four new ones.

Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Governor of Keralam, has been moved to Tamil Nadu. Om Prakash Mathur, Governor of Sikkim, takes his place in Keralam. Dushyant Gautam has been appointed Governor of Sikkim.

The other three appointments are Dr Sudha Yadav as Governor of Karnataka, Dr Dhal Singh Bisen as Governor of Uttarakhand and Braj Mohan Ram as Governor of Odisha. Each appointment takes effect from the date the Governor assumes charge of the office. The announcement did not list any previous posts for the four new appointees.

Where they are going

The changes come at a charged moment in two of the states. In Keralam, the Assembly passed a resolution on Monday seeking the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, a step the BJP opposed. In Tamil Nadu, TVK Chief Minister Vijay shared a stage with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Chennai on Sunday and pressed the Centre for ₹5,110 crore in school funds.

Uttarakhand is one of five states whose Assemblies complete their terms in early 2027, so Bisen is likely to be in office when the state votes. Its Assembly’s term ends in March, and the state’s final electoral rolls under the Special Intensive Revision are still awaited.

No reasons were given for the changes.
