Key points

  1. NTK cadres are due to protest in front of all district collectorates in Tamil Nadu on Saturday.
  2. A court remanded 12 accused, including Karthiga, to 15 days in judicial custody.
  3. One case accuses Karthiga and 57 others of disrupting CM Vijay's roadshow on 4 October.

Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), the party led by Seeman, is due to stage protests in front of every district collectorate in Tamil Nadu on Saturday against the arrest of its Dharapuram candidate and party workers, which it says rest on false cases.

Seeman called the statewide protest in a statement on Tuesday, after police arrested M Karthiga, who contested for the party from Dharapuram, and others.

The cases go back to the start of the month. On 2 October police booked two NTK men, Sanjay Gandhi and Sekar, for putting up a party flex banner without permission. When Karthiga and others gathered at the police station in protest, a case was registered against her and eight others.

Two days later, on 4 October, police filed a case against Karthiga and 57 others for allegedly disrupting a roadshow by Chief Minister Vijay without permission. Separate cases were registered for allegedly abusing police officers and for allegedly assaulting a man wearing a TVK scarf and his wife.

Karthiga was also reported to have been held over a road blockade during Vijay’s campaign. A court remanded all 12 accused to 15 days of judicial custody and ordered them lodged in Coimbatore Central Prison.

The party’s call is for protests in front of the collectorates in every district on the same day; it has not said how many cadres it expects. Neither the police nor the ruling TVK had responded to the party’s charge of false cases.
