Key points

  1. Ayush Badoni made 217 off 246 balls before Delhi declared on 648 for 6 against Gujarat.
  2. Sarfaraz Khan's unbeaten 139 put Mumbai 258 ahead of Himachal Pradesh.
  3. Haryana beat Chandigarh by an innings and 24 runs inside two days in Rohtak.

Ayush Badoni had already made Gujarat suffer on Sunday. On Monday he kept going, turning his overnight hundred into 217 off 246 balls as Delhi piled up 648 for 6 declared in their Ranji Trophy Elite match at Palam.

The Delhi captain’s double century came a day after Priyansh Arya fell one short of 200, and it left Gujarat, unbeaten after the first round, with a mountain to climb. They closed on 98 for 2, still 550 behind, with two days left to save the match.

Badoni’s innings was the biggest of a day of heavy scoring across the country, although nobody came close to the 400 not out that Chinmay Sutar made for Mizoram against Nagaland in the Plate group.

Sarfaraz and Patidar take charge

Sarfaraz Khan was unbeaten on 139 as Mumbai reached 398 for 4 against Himachal Pradesh, a lead of 258. Mumbai went into the round without Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ayush Mhatre, and the hundred from Sarfaraz meant they did not miss them.

Rajat Patidar was 107 not out as his side moved to 302 for 5 against Puducherry, a lead of 125.

In Rajasthan’s match against Railways, Karan Lamba and Sachin Yadav both fell for 194 after adding 338 for the third wicket. Rajasthan made 497 and Railways trail by 451.

Maharashtra were 403 for 5 against Jharkhand, 234 in front, after Digvijay Patil’s 148 and a century from Ankit Bawne. Kerala made 404 against Odisha, with Mohammed Azharuddeen 139 not out, and Odisha replied with 114 for 3.

Bowlers have their say

It was not all one-way traffic for batters. Harpreet Brar took 5 for 21 as Chhattisgarh slumped to 76 for 5 in reply to Punjab’s 456. Zeeshan Ansari’s five wickets bowled Goa out for 164 against Uttar Pradesh, and Tanay Thyagarajan took five as Hyderabad dismissed Andhra for 184 and took a 91-run lead.

Assam bowled Tripura out for 62 and enforced the follow-on. Tripura were 143 for 5 at stumps in their second innings, still 129 behind.

Vidarbha also have a match in their grip. Ravikumar Samarth’s 143 helped them past Jammu and Kashmir’s 260, and J&K were 7 for 4 in their second innings, 38 runs short of making Vidarbha bat again.

Haryana were the first side to finish. They beat Chandigarh by an innings and 24 runs in Rohtak with two days to spare.

What to watch on day three

Elsewhere, Karnataka made 342, with 135 from Manvanth Kumar, and Saurashtra were 164 for 4 in reply. Tamil Nadu took a lead of 179 over Uttarakhand thanks to Pradosh Ranjan Paul’s 136.

Play resumes on Tuesday, 20 October, for day three of the four-day round, which ends on Wednesday. Gujarat face a long fight to avoid defeat at Palam, and J&K and Tripura will need to bat through the day to keep their matches alive.
