Chad Laycock takes five wickets in one over, a first for a South African
The KZN Inland seamer finished with 6 for 26 against Titans in the Pro20 Cup, including four wickets in four balls, though his side still lost by 21 runs.

Key points
- Laycock took five wickets in the 19th over, four of them off consecutive balls.
- He is only the fourth bowler to do it in men's T20 cricket.
- Titans still won by 21 runs to stay unbeaten in the competition.
Chad Laycock has become the first South African to take five wickets in a single over in a T20 match, ripping through the Titans lower order for KZN Inland in the Pro20 Cup on Tuesday.
The Titans were cruising at 193 for 4 when Laycock came back for the 19th over. He removed Leus du Plooy, conceded two runs to Dayyaan Galiem, and then took four wickets in four balls: Galiem, Aphiwe Mnyanda, Janco Smit and Esosa Aihevba. The Titans were all out for 204.
Laycock had already dismissed Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who made 81 off 36 balls in an opening stand of 112 with Sinethemba Qeshile. He finished with a career-best 6 for 26 from his four overs.
Domestic Cricket South Africa called it “an extraordinary performance that will be remembered for a long time”.
Not enough for victory
The record did not bring a win. Chasing 205, KZN Inland reached 183 for 6, with Laycock himself unbeaten on 31 off 25 balls, and lost by 21 runs. The Titans are now unbeaten in six matches in the competition and remain top of the table.
Laycock is only the fourth bowler to take five wickets in an over in men’s T20 cricket, after Bangladesh’s Al-Amin Hossain in 2013, India’s Abhimanyu Mithun in 2019 and Indonesia’s Gede Priandana in 2025. Priandana’s feat remains the only one in a T20 international.
Laycock made his T20 debut in November 2024. He can bat too: his highest scores are an unbeaten 108 in first-class cricket and 99 not out in List A matches.
