The world No. 24 lost in straight games to the top seed in Odense, and Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand let a one-game lead slip against Malaysia's Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan.
Key points
- Tanvi Sharma lost 21-15, 21-13 to world No. 1 An Se-young in 38 minutes.
- Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand won the first game but lost 21-14, 17-21, 11-21 to Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan.

India’s campaign at the Denmark Open ended in the quarter-finals on Friday, when Tanvi Sharma ran into world No. 1 An Se-young and the women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand were beaten by Malaysia’s Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan in Odense.
Tanvi, ranked 24th in the world and the last Indian left in the singles draw, lost 21-15, 21-13 to the Korean top seed in 38 minutes. She had reached the last eight by beating Yvonne Li, a win that avenged PV Sindhu’s defeat earlier in the week.
A lead slips in the doubles
The doubles match was closer and, for a while, looked like it might go India’s way. Treesa and Gayatri, ranked 18th, led 11-7 at the first-game interval and took the opener 21-14. In the second they were 14-11 ahead before the Malaysian second seeds drew level and went on to win it 21-17. The decider was one-way traffic, with the Malaysians taking it 21-11.
It was the same opponents who knocked the Indians out in the quarter-finals of the Asian Games in Japan earlier this month. Treesa and Gayatri had reached Friday’s match by beating Indonesia’s fifth seeds Rachel Allessya Rose and Febi Setianingrum 21-16, 21-17.
A thin week for India
It was a week of early exits for the rest of the Indian contingent. PV Sindhu, Unnati Hooda, Lakshya Sen, Ayush Shetty and the men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty all went out in the first round, and Kidambi Srikanth lost in the second round to world champion Alex Lanier of France.
No Indian is involved in Saturday’s semi-finals. The tour moves straight on to the French Open, which runs from 20 to 25 October.
