Key points

  1. Harry Brook will captain England in three ODIs and five T20Is in Australia.
  2. Under-19 captain Thomas Rew, 18, and Eddie Jack get their first England call-ups.
  3. Jos Buttler misses out while he recovers from hamstring surgery.

England have handed a first senior call-up to Thomas Rew, the 18-year-old who captained their side to the final of the Under-19 World Cup in February, for a white-ball tour of Australia. Harry Brook will lead both 16-man squads, for three ODIs and five T20Is, named on Tuesday.

Rew, the youngest player in the party, is in the T20I group along with fellow newcomer Eddie Jack. Aneurin Donald keeps his place after making his debut in the 3-0 series win over Sri Lanka last month.

There are welcome returns too. Jacob Bethell, out since injuring his knee in the ODI series win against India in July, is back in both squads. Jofra Archer, rested for the tri-series in Pakistan, returns for the ODIs, and Phil Salt is back for the T20Is after a quad injury kept him out against Sri Lanka. Luke Wood has been recalled.

Jos Buttler is missing as he recovers from hamstring surgery, and Saqib Mahmood is out with a knee injury.

England are also thinking about the Test winter. Archer, Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker and Josh Tongue will fly home after the ODIs so their workloads can be managed before the World Test Championship series in South Africa.

The ODIs are in Perth on 13 November, Adelaide on 15 November and Hobart on 18 November. The T20Is follow in Melbourne (21 November), the Gold Coast (24 November), Brisbane (27 November), Sydney (29 November) and Canberra (2 December).

ODI squad: Harry Brook (captain), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker, Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, Jordan Cox, Henry Crocombe, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Josh Tongue.

T20I squad: Harry Brook (captain), Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, James Coles, Jordan Cox, Henry Crocombe, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Aneurin Donald, Eddie Jack, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Thomas Rew, Phil Salt, Luke Wood.
