Key points

  1. Leverkusen beat Freiburg 2-1, ending a run of eight wins in nine games for the visitors.
  2. Noah Cadiou's penalty gave Lorient a 1-0 win over Monaco, their first league defeat.
  3. Lyon top Ligue 1 with five teams level on 14 points.

Freiburg’s fine start to the Bundesliga season came to an end on Sunday when Patrik Schick scored 14 minutes from time to give Bayer Leverkusen a 2-1 win.

Derry Scherhant had put Freiburg ahead in the 14th minute, but Ibrahim Maza equalised five minutes later. It was Freiburg’s first league defeat of the season and their first loss in nine matches in all competitions, eight of which they had won. They stay on 13 points, one behind leaders Bayern Munich and second-placed Borussia Dortmund.

Leverkusen have now won six of their seven games in all competitions under Carles Martinez. Elsewhere, bottom club Borussia Monchengladbach lost 2-1 at home to Hoffenheim, who had lost every match since beating Stuttgart a month ago.

Ligue 1 tightens

In France, Monaco’s unbeaten record went at Lorient, where Noah Cadiou scored from the penalty spot in the 61st minute for a 1-0 win. Lorient moved up to seventh.

Lyon then beat Nice 2-1 to go top, but only just. Lyon, Paris Saint-Germain, Paris FC, Lille and Monaco are all level on 14 points, with Monaco now fifth.

Paris FC beat Rennes 4-3 with a penalty in stoppage time, and Marseille came from behind to win 5-2 at Angers, only their third win in nine league games this season.
