Punjab FC snatched a point from Mumbai City in the Indian Super League on Monday night, substitute Gurkirat Singh heading in a 90th-minute equaliser to make it 1-1 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.
Mumbai City had looked set for the win after Leandro Otormin scored from the penalty spot in the 63rd minute. The penalty was awarded when Bijoy Varghese fouled PN Noufal in the box.
Punjab kept pushing and the changes paid off. Sanathoi Meitei, one of their second-half substitutes, swung in a cross and Gurkirat, who had come on for Vishal Yadav, found space in the box and directed his header into the net.
A scrappy first half
The first 45 minutes were goalless but not without incident. Rishikanta Meitei tested Mumbai goalkeeper TP Rehenesh from long range in the fourth minute, and Mumbai lost winger Vikram Partap Singh to an early injury after a challenge with Rishikanta. Farukh Chaudhary replaced him.
At the other end, Punjab keeper Arshdeep Singh rushed off his line to deny Brandon Fernandes, and Khaiminthang Lhungdim hit the woodwork in first-half stoppage time.
Mumbai brought on Tluanga and Wilmar Jordan after taking the lead, but could not see the game out. For Punjab, it was a second late show in a week, after Messi Bouli scored in the last minute to beat Odisha FC on 14 October.
