India kept up their perfect start at the first Commonwealth Kabaddi Championship in Ahmedabad on Saturday, with the men beating Uganda 44-30 and the women brushing aside Singapore 32-16 at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex.

The men, led by Surjeet Singh, had opened with a 46-26 win over England on Friday. Uganda arrived with a win of their own, 45-29 over Malaysia, and made India work harder than England did, but the hosts were never in real danger.

India now share top spot in men’s Group A with Sri Lanka, who also have two wins and lead on score difference after beating Malaysia 50-28. Tanzania, who thrashed Nigeria 66-17 on Saturday, and Uganda are next on two points.

Women stay in charge

The women’s team, captained by Nidhi Sharma, followed their 73-13 rout of Malaysia with a comfortable win over Singapore, and lead Group A with a score difference of 76. Uganda, who beat Singapore 61-12 on the opening day, are second.

In the other women’s group, Kenya edged Sri Lanka 23-20 to make it two wins from two, and Scotland beat England 53-36.

The top two teams in each group go through to the semi-finals, where the Group A winners meet the Group B runners-up.
