Key points

  1. Kapil Parmar won bronze in the men's J1 -70kg judo.
  2. He beat Indonesia's Rafli Ahnaf Shidqi by ippon in 69 seconds.
  3. He had lost his semi-final to Indonesia's Junaedi earlier on Monday.

Kapil Parmar won India a judo bronze at the Asian Para Games on Monday, needing only 69 seconds to throw Indonesia’s Rafli Ahnaf Shidqi for ippon in the men’s J1 -70kg medal bout in Aichi.

It was a swift response to disappointment. Earlier in the day Parmar, who won bronze at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, had lost his semi-final by ippon to another Indonesian, Junaedi, ending his hopes of gold.

His day had started well. In his opening contest he beat Mongolia’s Bat-erdene Baatarsuren by ippon after 4 minutes and 53 seconds, a long, patient fight that contrasted sharply with the quick finish to his bronze bout.

His bronze came on a productive opening day for India’s judoka. Kokila beat China’s reigning world champion Yi Liu to reach the women’s J2 -52kg final, where she faces Kyrgyzstan’s Aibike Ulanbek Kyzy and is assured of at least silver.

India’s first two medals of the Games had come earlier on Monday at the shooting range, where Mona Agarwal won gold and Avani Lekhara silver in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1.
