Key points

  1. Joshua Kimmich is out of the Arsenal game after a death in his immediate family.
  2. Bayern are also without the suspended Michael Olise and the injured Jamal Musiala.
  3. Head coach Vincent Kompany may miss the match with a viral infection.

Bayern Munich will be without Joshua Kimmich for their Champions League match against Arsenal at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night.

The club said on Wednesday that the midfielder had been affected by a death in his immediate family. Kimmich had already missed the final training session on Tuesday. Bayern asked that the family’s privacy and grief be respected and that people refrain from further enquiries and reporting.

Olise and Musiala out too

Kimmich’s absence adds to a difficult week for Bayern. Michael Olise is suspended after being sent off in the 3-3 draw with Viking FK in Stavanger, and Jamal Musiala is out with a torn muscle fibre.

There is doubt on the touchline as well. Head coach Vincent Kompany has a viral infection and may miss the game. His assistant Aaron Danks said Kompany needed rest and was being monitored.

A good record at home

Bayern have four points from their first two games and sit tenth in the league phase, so a home win would steady their campaign. History is on their side: in seven Champions League home games against Arsenal they have won five, drawn one and lost one, and they have won the last three.

The match kicks off after midnight India time, early on Thursday 22 October.
