Key points

  1. Mona Agarwal scored a world record 357.5 in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions SH1 final.
  2. She finished 3.8 points clear of China's Zhang Cuiping.
  3. Avani Lekhara finished fourth after losing ground in the standing series.

Mona Agarwal won her second gold of the Asian Para Games on Friday, and she did it with a world record.

The Indian shooter scored 357.5 in the final of the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions SH1 at Aichi-Nagoya, finishing 3.8 points ahead of China’s Zhang Cuiping, who took silver.

The event, which tests shooters kneeling, prone and standing, turned in the standing series. That was where Avani Lekhara, India’s other finalist and one of the country’s most decorated para shooters, lost ground. She finished fourth, just off the podium.

It was a second title of the week for Mona, who opened India’s campaign on the first day by winning the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1. That day she reached 250 after the seventh series, an Asian Para Games record that beat the 249.6 Avani had set in Hangzhou in 2023, and Avani took silver to complete a one-two.

Friday’s gold was one of a cluster of Indian wins on the fifth day of the Games. By the time Mona had finished, India’s tally had grown to 103 medals, 27 of them gold, with the country fourth on the table and chasing its best-ever haul of 111 from Hangzhou.

The 50m 3 positions event is one of the most demanding in para shooting, and the world record marks a step up for Mona after a strong start to the week in the air rifle.
