Key points

  1. Pedro Neto scored both goals in Chelsea's 2-0 win at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
  2. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was taken to hospital with a head injury after colliding with Jarrad Branthwaite.
  3. Everton suffered their first defeat of the season, while Chelsea are fourth.

Pedro Neto scored twice as Chelsea won 2-0 at Everton on Saturday, but the afternoon at the Hill Dickinson Stadium ended with worry over goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who was taken to hospital with a head injury.

Martinez was hurt in a collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite. There was no word on his condition by the end of the match, and Chelsea will be waiting on the hospital’s assessment before deciding who keeps goal in their next games.

Neto strikes twice

The game was goalless at half-time. Neto broke the deadlock in the first minute of the second half, and Everton spent the rest of the match chasing an equaliser that never came. With the home side pushing forward, Neto added his second in stoppage time to make the game safe.

The defeat is Everton’s first of the season. Chelsea’s win lifts them to fourth in the table.

The 12:30 pm kick-off, UK time, was the first of five Premier League matches on a busy Saturday. Leaders Manchester City were due to host promoted Ipswich Town later in the evening, with Liverpool away at Brentford and Aston Villa at Newcastle.

What comes next

Chelsea’s main concern now is Martinez. The club had not said by Saturday evening how badly he was hurt or how long he might be out.
