Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence in New Delhi on Thursday, a day after the state cabinet passed a resolution honouring Modi’s 25 years as head of government.
The meeting lasted about 20 minutes and was described as a courtesy call. Sharma congratulated Modi on completing 25 years of public service. No details of what else was discussed have been made public.
Sharma was due to meet Union Minister Pralhad Joshi at 4 pm to discuss development issues in Rajasthan.
The cabinet’s resolution
At a special meeting chaired by Sharma on Wednesday evening, the Rajasthan Council of Ministers congratulated Modi on becoming the country’s longest-serving head of government, counting his 13 years as Gujarat Chief Minister from 7 October 2001 and three terms as Prime Minister.
The resolution said his governance would be remembered for a work culture of “reform, perform and transform”, and tied his leadership to the goal of a developed India, or Viksit Bharat, by 2047. It credited his guidance with helping Rajasthan tackle its water shortage and move towards self-reliance in power, especially renewable energy, and with growth in industry, investment and tourism.
The visit drew attention in Jaipur because of its timing: it follows the recent urban local body election results in Rajasthan and comes ahead of Panchayati Raj elections in the state.
