Key points

  1. Delhi's air quality index stood at 189 at 9 am on Sunday.
  2. That is up from 159 at 4 pm on Saturday, the Central Pollution Control Board's daily average.
  3. An AQI above 200 counts as 'poor' on the CPCB scale.

Delhi’s air quality index stood at 189 at 9 am on Sunday, in the ‘moderate’ category but close to its upper limit, according to the Central Pollution Control Board’s Sameer app.

The reading was 30 points worse than the board’s 24-hour average of 159 recorded at 4 pm on Saturday, and continues the slide that began after midweek rain briefly cleared the city’s air.

On the CPCB scale, an AQI from 0 to 50 is ‘good’, 51 to 100 ‘satisfactory’, 101 to 200 ‘moderate’, 201 to 300 ‘poor’, 301 to 400 ‘very poor’ and 401 to 500 ‘severe’.

The board’s daily bulletin, which gives the official 24-hour average for the city, is due at 4 pm. A reading above 200 would put Delhi back in the ‘poor’ band it touched briefly earlier in the week.
