Five people were killed in two separate road accidents on National Highway 19 in Durgapur, in West Bengal’s Paschim Bardhaman district, on Sunday morning.

In the first, a motorcycle carrying two young men and a woman crashed into the back of a truck near the Bhiringi intersection as it headed towards Piala. All three were taken to Durgapur Sub-divisional Hospital, where they died. Local residents said the motorcycle had been travelling so fast that its front wheel was jammed into the truck, and police had to bring in a crane to pull the vehicles apart.

In the second, a car with seven people on board, including the driver, hit the rear of a bus on the service road at Andal crossing while travelling from Durgapur towards Asansol. Two people died on the spot. The other five were taken to a hospital in Bidhannagar in a critical condition. The car’s occupants were said to have been returning from a cultural programme.

“Five people have died so far in two accidents in Durgapur this morning,” said Raspreet Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) of the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate.

Police are looking into how fast the motorcycle was going and whether its riders had been drinking, and how the car lost control before it struck the bus. The bodies of the three motorcycle riders have been sent for post-mortem examination. None of the victims had been named by Sunday afternoon.

The accidents came on a festival weekend when roads across the state are busy with people travelling to and from Durga Puja celebrations.
