Takht Damdama Sahib jathedar hands SGPC aid to those hurt in Jhota attack, plans statewide Ardas
Giani Tek Singh Dhanaula met the four people injured in the Mansa attack that killed anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota and called the killing a Panthic issue.

Key points
- Each of the four injured is getting ₹5 lakh from the SGPC.
- A prayer for Jhota will be held at every gurdwara in Punjab on a date to be announced.
- Jhota, 42, was shot dead in Mansa on 13 October.
The jathedar of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, Giani Tek Singh Dhanaula, on Thursday handed cheques to the people injured in the attack in Mansa that killed anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota, and said a prayer in his memory would be held across Punjab.
“The Ardas will be performed at all gurdwaras across the state,” he said, adding that the date would be announced soon.
Jhota, 42, was shot dead on 13 October. Four people were injured in the attack. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president, Harjinder Singh Dhami, announced on 17 October that each of them would get ₹5 lakh, half for medical costs and half as financial assistance.
The jathedar called the killing a serious blow to the Sikh community and praised Jhota’s family for standing firm. He asked people to keep party politics out of it, describing it as a Panthic issue, and said those responsible must be punished. “The sacrifice must not go in vain,” he said.
Jhota’s father, Bhim Singh, said the state government would also help the injured with their expenses. On 20 October, Mansa Deputy Commissioner Navjot Kaur gave cheques of ₹2.5 lakh and ₹90,000 to the families of two of the injured through the District Red Cross Society, and said the state was paying for the treatment of all four.
The Akal Takht’s acting jathedar, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, declared Jhota a Quami Shaheed, a martyr of the community, on 16 October, and Dhami has said his portrait will be put up in the Central Sikh Museum at the Golden Temple complex. Protests demanding justice have continued in Mansa, and the killing is expected to dominate the Punjab Assembly session that opened on Thursday.
