Police in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district have arrested four people, among them the victim’s wife and mother-in-law, for the murder of a 38-year-old man whose body was found beside a bridge earlier this week.

Rohit Kumar, from Katua Beda village in Mandu block, lived in a rented house in Ramgarh town. His body, with several injury marks, was found on the morning of 21 October near a bridge over the Parsa Nala on the Giddi-Naisarai road.

He and his wife, Anju Devi, 32, had gone to a Durga Puja fair in Argada, where the two are said to have argued. Kumar went missing after that. His brother, Karan Kumar, filed a written complaint at Mandu (Kuju) police station.

A special investigation team led by SDPO Alok Ranjan made the arrests on Saturday. Ramgarh Superintendent of Police Mukesh Kumar Lunayat said “technical and circumstantial evidence indicated that Rohit was murdered by his wife, Anju Devi”.

Besides Anju Devi, police arrested Kumar’s mother-in-law Sundari Devi, 51, his brother-in-law Dineshwar Prajapati, 26, and Md Shoukat Ansari, 35.

Police say all four confessed during questioning. Officers seized a blood-stained wooden plank and a dupatta that they believe were used in the killing. The accused have been sent to judicial custody.

Investigators suspect the murder followed frequent quarrels between the couple over Anju Devi’s alleged extramarital affair. She had also filed a police complaint linked to the dispute, police said.
