Key points

  1. Three suspects were detained from a train at Kota railway station on Monday morning.
  2. Police say two are from Haryana and one from Bihar; one is reportedly a minor.
  3. Mumbai Police have registered a case of attempt to murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Three men suspected of firing at actor Tiger Shroff’s car in Mumbai were detained from a train at Kota railway station in Rajasthan on Monday morning, less than a day after the attack in Juhu.

The operation was carried out jointly by Mumbai Police, Rajasthan Police and railway police after Mumbai investigators shared their inputs. “The Kota City Police team apprehended them from a train,” Kota Superintendent of Police Tejaswani Gautam said. She said two of the men are from Haryana and one from Bihar.

Two of the suspects have been identified as Ritik, from Bihar, and Rehan, from Haryana. The third is reported to be a minor, and police are still establishing who he is. They were found in the general coach and were expected to be handed over to Mumbai Police.

The attack

Gunmen opened fire on Shroff’s car at about 7 pm on Sunday near Pushpa Park in Juhu, as the actor left the football ground he visits on Sundays. His driver and an autorickshaw driver were injured. Shroff was not hit by any bullet but suffered minor injuries.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who visited the actor’s home on Sunday night, said five rounds were fired. “He has injuries on his left hand caused by gunpowder and shards of glass,” Shinde said. “No form of threat will be tolerated.”

Investigators believe the men had studied the actor’s routine before the attack. After the shooting they are thought to have ridden along SV Road through Vile Parle and Andheri, left their motorcycle near Andheri West station and boarded a local train towards Borivali before leaving the state. The three were reported to have been paid ₹50,000 in advance, but police have not confirmed this on record.

A post on social media claimed responsibility on behalf of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Police have not verified it and say they are examining any link.

Who sent them

The case, first registered at Juhu police station, has been taken over by the Mumbai Crime Branch. The FIR invokes Section 109(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita on attempt to murder and Section 3(5) on common intention, along with the Arms Act.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, speaking in Nagpur, said the attackers were being run from outside Maharashtra, possibly from abroad. “We will also track down their handlers, who hide elsewhere and send instructions from there,” he said.

The shooting has handed the opposition a fresh line of attack on the state government over law and order in Mumbai, where several film personalities have received threats from gangs in recent years. The state has said it will review security arrangements for celebrities.

The suspects are expected to be brought to Mumbai on transit remand, where the Crime Branch will question them about who hired them and who supplied the weapon.
