  3. His family says earlier complaints about death threats were not acted on in time.

A 35-year-old farmer was shot dead in Uttarakhand’s Udham Singh Nagar district on Saturday night, apparently because he had intervened in a dispute between two groups in his village a few days earlier, police said on Sunday.

Satnam Singh, of Siddha Navadiya village, was out checking his harvested crop when the attackers reached his house at about 10 pm. They were reported to have pelted the house with stones and opened fire. A young man of the family who tried to film them from the roof was shot at but escaped unhurt.

As they were leaving, the attackers ran into Satnam Singh and shot him in the chest. His family took him to the sub-district hospital in Sitarganj, from where he was referred to the district hospital in Rudrapur. He died there late that night.

The quarrel had begun about four days earlier, after Kuldeep Singh was assaulted or threatened. Satnam Singh stepped in, which angered Kuldeep Singh and his group.

Superintendent of Police (City) Pramod Kumar said a case had been registered on a complaint by the dead man’s brother against eight named people and several unidentified others. Police teams were carrying out raids to find them, and the body was sent for a post-mortem.

The family said it had earlier told police about death threats, but that “no effective action was taken in time”. The village was in a state of panic on Sunday.
