A retired Army man shot his younger brother dead in a quarrel over land in Bihar’s Vaishali district on Saturday and then gave himself up at the district police chief’s office, police said.

The shooting took place in Dhanushi village, which falls under the Kartahan police station. Police said Suresh Singh, 65, and his brother Somnath Singh, 60, had been arguing over a piece of land since the morning. The row escalated and Suresh allegedly fired at his brother with his licensed revolver. Somnath died on the spot.

Suresh Singh served in the Indian Army and later worked in the Income Tax Department, from which he has also retired. After the shooting he went to the office of the Vaishali Senior Superintendent of Police in Hajipur and surrendered. Police arrested him and seized the weapon.

Preliminary findings, police said, point to the land dispute between the two brothers as the cause of the killing.

Officers from Kartahan police station and senior district officials went to the village after the shooting. Somnath’s body was sent to the Sadar Hospital in Hajipur for a post-mortem examination, and extra police were deployed in Dhanushi to keep the peace.

Police have not said whether the licence for the revolver will be cancelled, or whether anyone else in the family was involved in the dispute.
