Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is due in Prayagraj on Thursday to begin work on a housing scheme for poor families on land that was once occupied by former MLA Atiq Ahmed.
He will perform the bhoomi pujan for the Padmalok residential scheme at Kasari-Masari. Reports differ on its size, from 76 flats to about 600. On the same trip he is to hand over keys to 556 families who have been allotted flats under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in Pipalgaon.
Prayagraj Development Authority secretary Vineet Kumar Singh said more than 2,000 people had registered for the Pipalgaon flats, and the beneficiaries were chosen by lottery in April 2025.
Land taken back from Atiq has been turned over to housing for the poor before. On 26 December 2021, Adityanath laid the foundation for 76 PMAY flats in Lukerganj on 1,731 square metres of land reclaimed from him. Atiq was elected MLA from Allahabad West five times in a row, and the area was long seen as his stronghold.
The Chief Minister is expected to land at the Police Lines helipad around noon. The proposed programme includes unveiling a statue of Mahashay Masooriyadin at Teliyarganj crossing, an address at the Printing Technology campus and a BJP voters’ convention at the Government Press campus ahead of the Legislative Council elections, before the housing events at Kasari-Masari and Airavat crossing. District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma held a late-night meeting with officials on Wednesday to prepare for the visit, which is expected to last three and a half to four and a half hours.
