The Indian Army’s top commanders began a three-day conference in New Delhi on Wednesday, at which Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is due to release a new Land Warfare Doctrine.
The Army Commanders’ Conference, held twice a year, is chaired by the Chief of the Army Staff, Gen Dhiraj Seth, and runs until Friday. The defence ministry described the doctrine as “a vision document providing an overarching framework” to prepare the force for the changing character of warfare. The ministry has not said on which day it will be released.
Over the three days, the Army’s senior leadership is discussing the security environment, operational readiness, capability development and what the ministry called future-ready transformation. The commanders will review work already under way, set priorities and give policy direction towards what the ministry described as a “progressive, adaptive, technologically enabled and future-ready Indian Army”.
Who will speak
Besides delivering an address, Rajnath Singh will unveil the Army’s annual United Nations Journal and honour soldiers who have served as UN peacekeepers.
Chief of Defence Staff Gen N S Raja Subramani and the Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, are among those due to address the commanders on security issues, as is the Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. Gen Seth will present awards for Green Military Stations and for aviation flight safety.
The conference comes days after the Navy commissioned INS Samarthak, its first indigenous multi-purpose vessel, at Karwar, and just after Singh represented India at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation heads of government meeting in Dushanbe.
