Census 2027: what you will be asked, including your caste
The population count asks 40 questions, from age and religion to Aadhaar, bank accounts and caste. Here is what to expect, when, and what remains unclear.
The short answer
Census 2027 is India's first census since 2011 and its first digital one. In the population count, enumerators will ask 40 questions, including caste for all groups for the first time since 1931, along with new items such as Aadhaar number, mobile number and bank accounts. Most of India will be counted in February 2027, with a reference date of 1 March 2027.
What is Census 2027?
It is India’s first census since 2011, and the first to be conducted digitally. It runs in two phases: house listing and housing, followed by population enumeration, when every person is counted. People also have the option of filling in their own details online before an enumerator visits.
The house listing phase was scheduled between April and September 2026. Each state or Union Territory had 30 days for house-to-house work, with an optional 15-day self-enumeration window before it, according to ANI. West Bengal, one of the later states, ran self-enumeration from 1 to 15 August and house-to-house listing from 16 August to 14 September.
What will I be asked?
Forty questions about each person, notified by the Registrar General on 14 August 2026. The full list was published in a gazette notification under the Census Act, 1948, which directs enumerators to “ask all such questions of all persons residing within such limits”. Reports by Business Standard and PTI name these among them:
- Age, religion, mother tongue, migration, work and fertility, largely carried over from 2011
- Whether you belong to a Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe, and your caste
- Particulars of your parents and spouse
- Field of study and digital literacy
- Aadhaar number, voter ID, passport and driving licence details, mobile number and permanent address
- The number of bank accounts you hold
- Where you received a Covid-19 vaccine
The house listing phase used a separate set of 33 questions, as reported by Telangana Today.
How will caste be recorded?
Question 10, which asked only about SC or ST status in 2011, now reads “SC/ST/Caste”, and covers every group. India last counted caste for all groups in 1931; every census since independence recorded only SC and ST status, Business Standard reported.
The notification did not come with a pre-set list of castes, so answers are to be recorded as people give them. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said a state-wise list, like those used in the Bihar and Telangana caste surveys, had been widely expected, and that its absence raised “serious doubts on intent”.
How the Registrar General will group millions of written answers into categories has not been made public.
When will my area be counted?
Most of India will be counted in February 2027, but some areas go earlier. Each schedule has its own reference date, the moment at which the population is counted.
Population count schedule
- Sep 2026Ladakh and snow-bound areas of J&K, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand; reference date 1 Oct 2026
- 16–30 Nov 2026Self-enumeration in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa and non-snow-bound Uttarakhand
- 1 Dec 2026–4 Jan 2027Door-to-door count in those four states; revisional round 5–9 Jan; reference date 5 Jan 2027
- Feb 2027Rest of India; reference date 1 Mar 2027
The four states counted early all have assembly terms ending between March and May 2027. Business Standard linked the earlier schedule to those polls; the notification itself gives no reason.
In the four early states, the population is counted as it stood at midnight on 5 January 2027, two months before the national reference date of 1 March 2027.
How does self-enumeration work?
You can enter your own household’s details online during a window just before the enumerator’s visit. In the four poll-bound states, that window is 16 to 30 November 2026. In the snow-bound areas it ran from 17 to 31 August 2026, PTI reported. Business Standard describes this option as one of the features of the first census to be conducted digitally.

Who runs the census, and what does it cost?
The Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, under the Union Home Ministry, runs it under the Census Act, 1948. The current Registrar General is Mritunjay Kumar Narayan, who signed both the August notification of questions and the September notification advancing the count in four states.
The census budget is ₹11,718 crore, as reported by Telangana Today and The Arunachal Times.
The field work needs a large workforce. In West Bengal alone, nearly 2 lakh enumerators were engaged for house listing, the state’s in-charge census director, Nikhil Pawan Kalyan, told ANI. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said on X that the state had covered all 1,73,066 house listing blocks before its 14 September deadline, UNI reported.
When will the results come out?
No date has been announced. LokVox could not find an official timetable for releasing population totals or caste tables. The count in most of India is due to end in early 2027. Until results are released, the 2011 census remains the latest official count of India’s population.
