India to host world legal metrology committee for the first time, in New Delhi next week
The 61st meeting of the International Committee of Legal Metrology, which sets global rules for weights, measures and measuring instruments, will be held in the capital from 26 to 28 October.

Key points
- New Delhi will host the 61st CIML meeting from 26 to 28 October.
- It is the first time India is hosting the committee, the consumer affairs ministry said.
- A CEEMS seminar and an OIML strategy workshop are planned alongside the meeting.
India will host the International Committee of Legal Metrology (CIML) for the first time when its 61st meeting opens in New Delhi on 26 October, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said on Monday.
The committee is the governing body of the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML), the intergovernmental body that writes model rules for the measuring instruments used in trade, health, safety and the environment. Its recommendations shape how countries certify everything from petrol pumps and shop scales to medical thermometers and electricity meters. The meeting will run until 28 October.
A week of metrology in the capital
According to the programme published by the OIML, the CIML session itself begins on the Monday afternoon and closes on Wednesday morning. It will be preceded on 26 October by a seminar on countries and economies with emerging metrology systems (CEEMS), a forum for nations still building their weights-and-measures institutions. An OIML strategic workshop is scheduled for the Tuesday morning.
Dr Bobjoseph Mathew, the CIML President, has urged member states to send representatives. “I encourage you to attend and to participate actively in the CIML meeting,” he wrote in the official invitation. Members who cannot attend may hand their vote to another member by proxy.
Why it matters for India
In India, legal metrology is run by the consumer affairs ministry under the Legal Metrology Act, and enforced by state departments that check the accuracy of scales, fuel dispensers and packaged goods. The rules these departments apply draw on the international recommendations that the OIML and its committee adopt.
The ministry has not yet named the venue or the minister who will open the meeting.
