Key points

  1. S. Jaishankar held an interaction with Heads of Mission from Africa in New Delhi on Saturday.
  2. He said the partnership is built on shared histories and South-South solidarity.
  3. Earlier this month he visited Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire and Ethiopia.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Heads of Mission from African countries in New Delhi on Saturday, saying afterwards that India’s relationship with the continent rested on a shared past and common goals.

“India-Africa partnership is built on shared histories, common aspirations and deep South-South solidarity,” Jaishankar said in a post on X after the interaction.

He said the discussion had covered the partnership itself, “the rise of Africa in a multipolar world” and new possibilities for cooperation centred on people. He did not say which countries were represented or whether any specific projects were discussed.

After the Africa tour

The meeting came two weeks after Jaishankar’s official visit to Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire and Ethiopia from 6 to 10 October.

In Addis Ababa he chaired a conference of India’s own Heads of Mission in Africa and spoke at the Adwa Memorial Museum, where he set out his view of the partnership. Future cooperation, he said there, should build capabilities rather than create dependencies, and he called for a reformed UN Security Council that gives Africa fair representation.

“India and Africa share deep linkages built upon Global South solidarity, strategic autonomy,” he said at the time, adding multipolarity and common development aspirations to the list.
