Modi to visit Canada on 11-12 December, with G20 trip to Florida taking shape
India's High Commission in Ottawa has announced the Canada leg. A US visit for the G20 summit and a stop in Brussels are expected to make it a three-nation tour.

Key points
- India's High Commission in Ottawa says Modi will visit Canada on 11 and 12 December.
- He is likely to attend the G20 summit in Florida, his first US visit since February 2025.
- A Brussels stop could see the India-EU free trade agreement signed.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Canada on 11 and 12 December, India’s High Commission in Ottawa has said, in what is shaping up as a three-nation tour that is also expected to take him to the United States for the G20 summit and to Brussels.
The Canada dates follow a phone call between Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Writing on X after the call, Modi said the two leaders had agreed to build on the positive momentum in ties across trade, energy, technology, security and people-to-people links. Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand was in New Delhi last week, where she met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Modi, and a Canadian trade mission led by International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu has also visited.
The US leg
The government has not yet announced the US visit. The G20 summit, hosted by President Donald Trump, is due to be held at the Trump National Doral resort in Miami on 14 and 15 December. If Modi goes, it will be his first trip to the US since his Washington visit in February 2025, and a meeting with Trump on the sidelines is expected.
Ties have been strained since then, with Washington objecting to India’s purchases of Russian crude. On the proposed bilateral trade agreement, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Friday that both sides remained engaged in reaching an early conclusion, and noted that Jaishankar and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal had recently discussed it.
A stop in Brussels
The tour is also expected to include a stop in Brussels, where India and the European Union could sign their long-pending free trade agreement.
Before then, Jaishankar is due to hold talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Mumbai on Tuesday, 20 October.
