Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday night at the start of a three-day visit, and will hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House on Thursday.
Minister of State Raj Bhushan Choudhary received him at the airport. “A warm welcome to Prime Minister Donald Tusk of Poland on his arrival in New Delhi,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal wrote on X. “The visit will provide fresh impetus to the India-Poland Strategic Partnership and further deepen our longstanding ties.”
Tusk has come at Modi’s invitation. With him are Andrzej Domański, Poland’s Minister of Finance and Economy, and a large business delegation, a sign that trade and investment will sit high on an agenda that also takes in defence and technology. The visit runs until Friday, with business forums in two cities.
A full day in Delhi
Thursday begins with a meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. Tusk will then go to Rajghat to lay a wreath at Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial before the talks with Modi at Hyderabad House, after which both leaders are expected to make press statements.
The two are due to review the whole of the relationship and exchange views on regional and global issues. The MEA has listed trade and investment, defence, emerging technologies, renewable energy, education, culture and people-to-people ties as the areas of cooperation on the table. It has also said the visit will deepen India’s strategic partnership with the European Union, of which Poland is a member.
An India-Poland Business Forum meets in New Delhi on Thursday. In the evening Tusk flies to Bengaluru, where he is to meet the Karnataka Governor and Chief Minister. A second business forum is planned there on Friday, along with meetings with companies from the information technology and space sectors.
Two years after Warsaw
Modi’s visit to Poland in August 2024 lifted the relationship to a Strategic Partnership. In the run-up to this trip, Jaishankar was in Warsaw on 4 September, where he and Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski reviewed the Joint Action Plan for 2024 to 2028. He also called on Polish President Karol Nawrocki.
This is Tusk’s second official visit to India as Prime Minister. He first came in 2010, during his earlier term, and was in New Delhi again in 2017 for the India-EU Summit, then as President of the European Council.
No agreements have been announced ahead of the talks. Any outcomes are expected to be announced after the meeting at Hyderabad House.
