- Margins ranged from 1,42,224 votes in Nagaon to 8,482 in Thattanchavady.
All six seats that went to bypolls on 6 October were won by the party that governs the state concerned. The BJP took the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in Assam and two assembly seats in West Bengal. Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) won both Tamil Nadu seats, and the All India N.R. Congress (AINRC) held Thattanchavady in Puducherry. Votes were counted on 9 October.
Assam: BJP takes Nagaon from the Congress
Devasish Sharma of the BJP beat AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal by 1,42,224 votes, according to Election Commission figures reported by DD News (7,14,349 votes to 5,72,125). The Congress’s Sibamoni Bora was third. The seat fell vacant when Pradyut Bordoloi, who had held it for the Congress since 2019, resigned; he had joined the BJP and won the Dispur assembly seat in this year’s state election, DD News reported. Turnout was 76.19%, India TV reported.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on X: “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, BJP has secured a decisive mandate”, IANS reported.
West Bengal: two large BJP wins
In Nandigram, which Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari gave up after winning both Nandigram and Bhabanipur in 2026, the BJP’s Hasirani Rath polled 1,64,427 votes to Congress candidate Milan Pradhan’s 41,674, a margin of 1,22,753, PTI reported. The Trinamool Congress candidate, Sanchita Pradhan Dey, withdrew her nomination at the last moment, IANS reported, and Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee then backed the Congress candidate, according to PTI.
Rejinagar was vacated by Humayun Kabir, who won two seats in 2026 and kept Naoda. The BJP’s Shankharavh Sarkar won with 1,29,914 votes, about 63.14% of the total, against 54,098 for Golam Nabi Azad of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), according to PTI. The Congress candidate polled 6,168 votes and the Trinamool candidate 3,847. The Trinamool and its breakaway, the Democratic Trinamool Congress, fielded separate candidates.
Nationalist forces are all set to win both the seats. Bengali Muslim voters have supported the BJP in both the seats.
PTI noted that the results alone do not establish how any community voted.
Tamil Nadu: TVK keeps both seats it took from the AIADMK
Both Tamil Nadu seats, reserved for Scheduled Castes, fell vacant after their AIADMK MLAs resigned and joined the ruling TVK, which then fielded the same two people. In Madurantakam, K. Maragatham Kumaravel won 72,149 votes to DMK candidate I. Paranthamen’s 52,068, a margin of 20,081, South First reported. In Dharapuram, P. Sathyabama polled 66,841 against 57,370 for the DMK’s S. Suganya, a margin of 9,471. The AIADMK finished third in both.
TVK won 108 of the 234 seats in this year’s assembly election, IANS reported. South First reported that its strength fell to 107 after Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay vacated Tiruchirappalli East, and that the two wins take it to 109, still short of the 118 needed for a majority. The government is supported by the Congress, the VCK, the Left parties and the IUML, according to South First, though the Left parties contested these bypolls separately and campaigned against TVK. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami accused TVK of trying to build a majority of its own by inducing opposition MLAs to join it, South First reported.
