SP asks Election Commission to act against Adityanath over Legislative Council polls
The Samajwadi Party's state president accused the Chief Minister of breaking the model code to sway the vote for 11 Council seats, and sought house arrest for both deputy chief ministers.

Key points
- SP state president Shyam Lal Pal sought a notice to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath from the Election Commission.
- He asked for deputy CMs Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak to be placed under house arrest.
- The SP alleges the government is trying to influence the election to 11 Legislative Council seats.
The Samajwadi Party on Thursday asked the Election Commission to issue a notice to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, accusing him of breaking the model code of conduct to sway the ongoing election to 11 seats in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council.
In a memorandum to the Commission, SP state president Shyam Lal Pal also demanded that the two deputy chief ministers, Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, be placed under house arrest.
“Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is continuously violating the model code of conduct,” Pal said. “He is influencing the election being held for 11 seats of the Legislative Council in the state.”
What the SP alleges
The party accused the Chief Minister of misusing government machinery to help the BJP’s candidates. It alleged that officials, including district magistrates, had been called to circuit houses and dak bungalows and pressed to secure a BJP win.
The memorandum pointed to two recent events. It said that on 12 October Adityanath held an interaction with 12,000 teachers in Gorakhpur, and that on 13 October the government raised the honorarium of 68,000 gram praharis, the village watchmen, and announced the recruitment of chowkidars. The SP says both were meant to influence voters.
There was no response from the Election Commission, the BJP or the Chief Minister’s office by Thursday afternoon.
The Council polls come a few months before the Assembly election, which is expected in February and March 2027.
