- Alexis Mac Allister scored twice and Florian Wirtz made it 4-2.
- Manchester City beat AEK Athens 5-1, with Elliot Anderson scoring the first goal.
Liverpool made life very hard for themselves at Anfield on Tuesday night and still found a way to win. Two defensive mistakes put Villarreal 2-0 up inside half an hour, but the home side hit back to win 4-3 in a wild Champions League game.
Georges Mikautadze opened the scoring in the fifth minute after an error by Virgil van Dijk, and Sergi Cardona added a second in the 29th minute after another lapse at the back.
The fightback started with an Alexis Mac Allister header, and Liverpool were level by half-time when Villarreal made a costly mistake of their own. In the second half Mac Allister scored again to complete the comeback, and Florian Wirtz made it 4-2. Villarreal pulled a goal back late on, but Liverpool held on.
City in control
Across the north-west, Manchester City had a far calmer night against AEK Athens and won 5-1 at the Etihad. Elliot Anderson put them ahead in the 13th minute, turning in a rebound from an Enzo Fernandez free kick, and Phil Foden doubled the lead before half-time.
Stavros Pilios pulled one back for AEK seven minutes into the second half, but Rayan Cherki restored City’s two-goal cushion early in the second half and the hosts pulled clear.
The win was a lift for City a week after they were beaten 4-2 at home by Paris Saint-Germain, who beat Barcelona by the same score on Tuesday night.
