Madueke's late goal wins it for Arsenal at Forest as Leeds hold Manchester United

Key points

  1. Substitute Noni Madueke scored late as Arsenal won 1-0 at Nottingham Forest.
  2. Manchester United were held 1-1 by Leeds at the end of a difficult week.
  3. Diego Gomez scored from about 50 metres in Brighton's 5-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Arsenal had to wait until late on to break down Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Sunday, and it was a substitute, Noni Madueke, who scored the only goal to give the champions a 1-0 win.

It was far from fluent. The defending champions laboured for long spells against a Forest side that made them work for every opening, and it took a fresh pair of legs off the bench to settle it. The three points keep Arsenal in the chase behind Manchester City, who stretched their lead at the top to six points with Saturday’s 3-2 win over Ipswich.

Manchester United also struggled. Their trip to Elland Road ended in a 1-1 draw with Leeds United, closing what had been a challenging week for the club with only a point.

The goal of the day came at the Amex. In the seventh minute, Brighton’s Paraguay international Diego Gomez struck from close to the halfway line, about 50 metres out, and sent the ball over Crystal Palace goalkeeper Walter Benitez. Brighton went on to beat their rivals 5-0, one of the biggest wins of the Premier League weekend.

The results leave the title race much as it was on Saturday night, with City setting the pace and Arsenal grinding out wins to stay close.
