Tamil Nadu wrapped up the first result of Tuesday in the Ranji Trophy, beating Uttarakhand by an innings and 66 runs in Chennai on the third day of round two. Off-spinner R Sai Kishore took 6 for 34 as Uttarakhand, made to follow on after being bowled out for 134, folded again for 113.

Captain S Ajith Ram backed him up with 4 for 33. Tamil Nadu had made 313 in their only innings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, and the spinners did the rest.

Bengal close in at Palam

The tightest game of the day was in Delhi, where Services were chasing 209 to beat Bengal. They had resumed on 12 without loss and fought hard, but by the second session they were 121 for 5, still 88 short.

Shahbaz Ahmed, back in the side after injury, again did the damage with the ball. He had figures of 3 for 36 from 18.3 overs in the second innings, to go with 4 for 35 in the first. Pradipta Pramanik had one wicket.

Shahbaz said on Monday that he had been “in rehab at the COE, and there was no clearance for the injury” before this match. “I have had a good start with the ball,” he said. He also praised his new-ball partner Amir Gani, who took 4 for 31 in the first innings: “The main thing is that Amir bowls a very tight line.”

Bengal, playing without Mohammed Shami, had been bowled out for 146 in their second innings on Monday, with Rahul Singh taking 5 for 43 for Services.

Mumbai pile on the runs

In Bilaspur, Mumbai batted on after Sarfaraz Khan’s hundred and declared on 528 for 8, a lead of 388 over Himachal Pradesh, who had been dismissed for 140 on the first day. Himachal were 34 for 1 in their second innings, still 354 behind, with Mohit Avasthi taking the wicket.

In Kanpur, Goa set off after a target of 236 against Uttar Pradesh, who had been bowled out for 197 in their second innings. Openers Suyash Prabhudessai and Shivendra Bhujbal took Goa to 39 without loss.

The four-day round finishes on Wednesday.
