Key points

- More won bronze in 2024 and 2025 before this silver.
Vishvajit More came within a point of a world title at the U23 World Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas, losing the 55kg Greco-Roman final 12-13 to Georgia’s Koba Karumidze in a bout settled in its final seconds.
The silver, decided early on Thursday, India time, is India’s first medal of these championships and the best result by an Indian Greco-Roman wrestler at the event. More is the first Indian to reach a Greco-Roman final at the U23 Worlds.
It also completes a steady climb. More won bronze at the 2024 edition and again in the 55kg class in Serbia last year.
His run in Las Vegas included an 8-1 quarter-final win over Iran’s Shamsipour, the U20 world champion, on his way to the gold-medal bout.
India’s challenge in the United States has been weakened off the mat. Nine Indian wrestlers, among them the 2024 U17 world champion Neha Sangwan, were reported to have been refused US visas for the event, on the grounds that they were under 20 and did not hold full-time jobs.
The championships continue until 18 October.
