Police in Dum Dum, on the northern edge of Kolkata, have arrested a man who allegedly posed as a police officer using an identity card he had made with artificial intelligence.

The incident took place on Friday night at the zero point of the Belgharia Expressway in North 24 Parganas district. Police said the man approached traffic personnel of the Nimta Traffic Guard and demanded that they arrange a car to take him home. He introduced himself as a police officer and pressed them to do as he said, and kept threatening and abusing them when they did not.

The traffic personnel asked to see his identity card. When they scanned it, it turned out to be fake. During questioning he allegedly admitted that he had created the card with the help of artificial intelligence. Officers from Dum Dum police station then arrested him.

“The accused has been arrested for using a fake police identity card and trying to exert influence,” the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate said through a senior officer.

A case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and the man was produced before a court in Barrackpore on Saturday. Police said they would seek his custody for further questioning.

Investigators want to find out how the card was made, whether he had used it before to influence people or extort money, and whether anyone helped him. The man has not been named.
