Key points

  1. Yogendra Sao has been expelled from primary membership for three years.
  2. The decision was taken by state Congress president Keshav Mahto Kamlesh.
  3. The party says Sao made personal and insulting remarks about the coalition government and the Chief Minister.

The Jharkhand Congress has expelled former state minister Yogendra Sao from the party’s primary membership for three years, accusing him of repeatedly breaking party discipline. It is the second time in seven months that the party has shown him the door.

The decision was taken by state Congress president Keshav Mahto Kamlesh and announced on Tuesday by Rakesh Sinha, the party’s media in-charge in the state.

Sinha said Sao had been making objectionable, insulting and personal remarks through the media against the coalition government and the Chief Minister. The Congress is part of the ruling alliance in Jharkhand, and the party treated the attacks as indiscipline.

A notice, then the axe

Sao was also expelled for three years in March, after remarks against the government in a Facebook Live session. That decision was later revoked.

On 20 September the state party’s disciplinary committee, chaired by Rameshwar Oraon, issued him a fresh notice for alleged violation of party discipline. It asked him to give a written explanation within three days, appear in person, and say why action should not be taken against him under the party constitution. Sinha said the expulsion followed that notice.

No response from Sao to Tuesday’s decision was available.
