Key points

  1. Kishor said Choudhary's remark on Lord Ram and Modi was an attempt to deify the Prime Minister.
  2. Jan Suraaj is contesting all eight legislative council seats; the BJP and JD(U) four each.
  3. He backed Rahul Gandhi's march, saying people had lost trust in the Election Commission.

Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor has accused Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary of arrogance over a remark crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi with giving Lord Ram a home, and asked voters to punish the ruling alliance in the coming legislative council elections.

Speaking to reporters at Bihta near Patna late on Thursday, Kishor said Choudhary had told a function marking Modi’s 25 years in public office that Lord Ram lived in a tent for 400 years and that Modi, who was giving homes to the poor, had given the deity a place to live as well. “What is this if not arrogance,” Kishor said, calling it part of the BJP’s “attempt to deify” Modi.

Jan Suraaj is contesting all eight seats in the council polls, where the BJP and the Janata Dal (United) are fighting four each. Kishor said a defeat for the NDA candidates would be a “chastisement” for the coalition, and accused the government of failing on jobs and education.

He also defended Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s march to the Supreme Court over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, saying people had “lost trust in the Election Commission”. “When people feel justice isn’t being done, they will hit the streets,” he said. He criticised the Chief Justice of India over a “cockroach” remark that he said had set off the youth protests, and said the court had refused to hear his party’s petition alleging voter bribery before the Bihar Assembly election.

Neither Choudhary nor the BJP had responded by Friday afternoon.
