Key points
- Mehr said Revolutionary Guards drones targeted Komala's headquarters in Balisan.
- The Guards have not claimed the strike themselves.
- Nine Komala members were killed in an attack near Sulaymaniyah on 17 July.
Iran has struck the headquarters of the Iranian Kurdish opposition group Komala in northern Iraq with drones, Iranian media said on Sunday.
The Mehr news agency said a Revolutionary Guards drone operation had targeted Komala’s base in the Balisan area of Iraqi Kurdistan. It did not give details of damage or casualties, and the Guards have not claimed the strike. There was no immediate word from Komala or from the Kurdistan Regional Government.
A long-running campaign
Tehran has repeatedly hit Iranian Kurdish groups based across the border since the regional war began in February. It accuses them of having Israeli support. The deadliest recent attack came on 17 July, when nine Komala members were killed near Sulaymaniyah.
Why it matters beyond Iraq
The strike shows Iran keeping up military pressure beyond its borders while the United States threatens fresh strikes if no deal is reached. For India, any widening of the war adds to the strain already visible on Gulf routes, from suspended flights to Saudi Arabia to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
