Key points

  1. Yogi Adityanath said the SP's PDA slogan really stands for "Parivaar Development Authority".
  2. He said the SP gave one Rajya Sabha ticket to "chacha-jaan" and mortgaged the other to a Mumbai tycoon.
  3. Elections are being held for 11 Legislative Council seats in Uttar Pradesh.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath turned the Samajwadi Party’s favourite slogan against it on Friday, telling a meeting of teachers and graduates in Ghaziabad that the party’s “PDA” was really about one family.

“‘PDA’ actually stands for ‘Parivaar Development Authority’,” he said. Akhilesh Yadav’s party uses PDA to mean its coalition of the backward classes, Dalits and minorities. Adityanath also offered a second reading of the letters, “Paraya Dhan Apna”, accusing the party of treating others’ wealth as its own.

He went after the SP’s picks in the recent Rajya Sabha polls. “They gave the first ticket to their ‘chacha-jaan’,” he said, in what was taken as a reference to Ram Gopal Yadav. “And for the second ticket, they essentially mortgaged the ticket to a wealthy tycoon from Mumbai.”

The meeting was part of the BJP’s campaign for the Legislative Council. “Elections are being held for 11 MLC seats in the state, and the results are expected to be even better than that of the Rajya Sabha polls,” Adityanath said. In the Rajya Sabha contest for 10 seats, he said, “the BJP won 8 seats, while 2 seats went to the SP.”

He accused the SP of scaring off investors and neglecting young people. “Had the Samajwadi Party been in power, riots would have already broken out,” he said. He also promised that an elevated route would let pilgrims visit the Maa Shakambhari shrine in any season, and said 4.5 crore kanwariyas travel between Ghaziabad and Haridwar.

The SP had not responded by the time of publishing. Earlier this week it asked the Election Commission to act against Adityanath over his role in the council campaign.
