Anthropic says it is hiring fewer junior engineers and spending more time in meetings
The Claude maker published data on its own workforce, arguing that how an AI-heavy company changes may hint at what is coming for hiring and work across the economy.

Key points
- Junior staff fell from 21% to 14% of Anthropic's technical employees since early 2025.
- Only 9% of technical hires are now junior, down from 27%.
- Meeting time per employee is up 20% on a year ago, by calendar data.
Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI models, says its own workforce has become more senior, less dominated by engineers and more taken up with meetings as it builds its work around AI.
In a report released on Friday, the San Francisco company said the trends at a business that “has thoroughly molded its workflows around AI” may indicate “how AI will shift work organization, hiring, and labor demand across the economy.”
Fewer juniors
The sharpest change is at the bottom of the ladder. Junior employees made up 21% of Anthropic’s technical departments in early 2025 and 14% now. Among new technical hires, the junior share has dropped from 27% to 9%.
Technical teams have also shrunk as a share of the company, from 61% to 56% of staff. Anthropic put this down to the “natural expansion of business functions as the company scales” and to coding tools that let non-technical employees build software themselves.
In a survey in April, 27% of employees said Claude had made them more productive, and 20% said their job had shifted from doing the work themselves to managing Claude instances.
More meetings
Calendar data show meeting time per employee rising 20% year on year, and 16% for technical staff. Anthropic said the increase reflected the need for human trust and accountability, and that employees described face-to-face coordination as indispensable.
The company said AI had lifted output, with more code written per person, more deals closed per sales representative and more contracts processed. It added a caveat: “more code does not necessarily mean better code or business impact.” It said it had seen no sign of falling code quality.
The report comes in a busy week for the company, after the coding platform Replit said it had made OpenAI its default model provider in place of Anthropic.
