Declan Rice rescues 2-2 draw for Arsenal at Bayern after Saka limps off
Substitute Eberechi Eze put Arsenal ahead in Munich before Alphonso Davies and a Harry Kane penalty turned the game. Rice's 82nd-minute strike earned a point.
Key points
- Bayern and Arsenal drew 2-2 at the Allianz Arena in the Champions League.
- Bukayo Saka went off in the first quarter-hour with a muscle problem; his replacement Eze scored.
- Declan Rice equalised in the 82nd minute after Kane's penalty had put Bayern ahead.
Declan Rice struck eight minutes from time to earn Arsenal a 2-2 draw at Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday night, on an evening when the visitors lost Bukayo Saka early to injury.
Saka went off inside the first quarter of an hour with a muscle problem, and his replacement made an instant impact. Eberechi Eze, set up by Martin Odegaard, gave Arsenal the lead after 25 minutes at a full Allianz Arena of 75,000.
Bayern, without the suspended Michael Olise and the injured Jamal Musiala, were level ten minutes later. Harry Kane threaded a pass through for Alphonso Davies, who finished to make it 1-1. Before half-time Bruno Guimaraes headed against the bar for Arsenal, and Manuel Neuer kept the scores level.
Kane from the spot, Rice in reply
Bayern went ahead on 61 minutes. Kane’s shot was blocked by a hand, the penalty was given, and Kane converted it himself. Bayern then pushed for a third: Ismael Saibari hit the side-netting, Dayot Upamecano had a header saved and Konrad Laimer miscued a volley.
Arsenal stayed in the game and were rewarded in the 82nd minute, when Rice played a one-two and drove the ball into the far corner. Neuer still had to save from Jurrien Timber late on to keep the point for Bayern.
Kai Havertz and Ezri Konsa were booked for Arsenal. Davide Massa of Italy refereed.
What it means
The result keeps both clubs in contention after three games of the league phase. Arsenal won last season’s league-phase meeting 1-0 at the Emirates. Saka’s fitness will now be watched closely in north London. Bayern return to the Bundesliga with a trip to Freiburg on Sunday.
